Where to Buy Quality SMD LED Screens in Pakistan: A Buyer’s Checklist
“SMD LEDs” can mean individual LED components (used in lighting and electronics) or finished LED display screens built from them.…

“SMD” and “COB” appear in two different markets: LED lighting (lamps, downlights, strips) and direct-view LED display screens. The terms mean similar packaging approaches in both, but the trade-offs are different. This article focuses on LED display screens, which is what we supply, with a short note on lighting at the end. Performance varies a lot between products, so compare datasheets for the specific models you are considering.
The difference is in how the LED chips are packaged. SMD (Surface Mount Device) displays use individual LED packages, each typically containing red, green and blue chips, soldered onto the module’s circuit board. COB (Chip on Board) displays mount the bare LED chips directly on the board and cover the whole surface with a protective encapsulation layer. This affects surface protection, how fine the pitch can be, repair methods, appearance and cost.
| Factor | SMD Displays | COB Displays |
| Pitch range | Very wide range, from fine indoor to coarse outdoor | Mainly fine and very fine pitches |
| Surface protection | Individual packages can be knocked off by impact | Encapsulated surface is generally more resistant to knocks, moisture and dust |
| Repairability | Individual LED packages can be replaced by skilled technicians | Usually repaired by replacing or factory-repairing the module |
| Viewing angle and appearance | Typically wide; depends on product | Typically wide, with a smooth, uniform surface; depends on product |
| Heat | Depends on the design; compare datasheets and operating temperatures | |
| Availability and cost | Widely available; usually lower cost at mainstream pitches | Often higher cost; more common at fine pitches |
| Typical uses | Most signage, billboards, rental and many video walls | Fine-pitch indoor walls, control rooms, touch-prone areas |
Indoor retail screens are often viewed from close range, so pitch and image quality matter. SMD indoor LED screens are a common, cost-effective choice for mall directories, lobbies and retail signage. Where people may touch or bump the screen, or very fine pitches are needed, COB products are worth considering for their protected surface.
Outdoor screens need high brightness and weather protection. Most outdoor billboards today use SMD (and some DIP) modules with outdoor sealing and an IP rating. Whichever packaging you choose, check the product’s brightness, IP rating and operating temperature for your site.

Whatever the packaging, choose specifications for your venue. Pixel pitch is the distance between pixels and affects comfortable viewing distance and resolution. Brightness, in nits, must suit the ambient light: indoor screens need far less than outdoor screens in sunlight.
Large screens need careful structural alignment, ventilation and signal and power distribution. Structures should be designed by qualified structural engineers, electrical work done by qualified electricians, and the screen calibrated after installation. SMD LED can help you choose suitable products and discuss installation; ask us what our scope covers.
You may also see GOB (Glue on Board) in product lists. GOB modules start as standard SMD modules, then a clear protective layer is applied over the surface. The aim is to add some of the knock and moisture resistance associated with COB while keeping the SMD production approach.
GOB can suit rental screens, floor-level installations and areas where people pass close by. The coating can make individual LED repair harder, so ask how a damaged module would be serviced. As with SMD and COB, the result depends on the specific product.
The table below is a general starting point, not a fixed rule.
| Situation | Common choice | Why |
| Outdoor billboard or facade | Outdoor SMD | Wide pitch range, high brightness, outdoor-sealed cabinets |
| Shop, mall or lobby signage | Indoor SMD | Widely available and serviceable at mainstream pitches |
| Boardroom or control room at close range | COB or fine-pitch SMD | Very fine pitch and a smooth surface |
| Screens people may touch or bump | COB or GOB | Protected surface |
| Rental and event screens | SMD or GOB | Frequent handling and transport |
For pitch, a practical rule of thumb is that the minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly equal to the pixel pitch in millimetres. For brightness, indoor screens are typically around 600–1,000 nits, while outdoor screens usually need around 4,500–6,500 nits for direct sun, with at least an IP65 front rating. You can see typical options on our indoor SMD screens and outdoor SMD screens pages.
Dust, heat and humidity affect every screen, whatever the packaging. Plan for regular gentle cleaning, checks on fans and filters where fitted, and inspection of cables and seals before and after the monsoon.
Our services include help with product selection, installation and after-sales support.
In lighting products, COB LEDs give a single, concentrated light source, often used in spotlights and downlights, while SMD LEDs spread light across many small packages, common in panels and strips. Which is better depends on the fitting, beam pattern and heat-sinking; compare the specific products.
Choosing between SMD and COB depends on pitch, environment, durability needs and budget. SMD LED can discuss your site, viewing distances and conditions and suggest suitable options. Contact us to request a quotation.
