SMD vs COB LEDs: Which Is Better for Your LED Display?
“SMD” and “COB” appear in two different markets: LED lighting (lamps, downlights, strips) and direct-view LED display screens. The terms…

“SMD LEDs” can mean individual LED components (used in lighting and electronics) or finished LED display screens built from them. This guide is about buying finished SMD LED display screens in Pakistan for advertising, retail, corporate and event use. It is written by SMDLED.pk, a supplier, so rather than ranking suppliers it explains what to check so you can buy quality SMD LEDs from any vendor, including us. Pakistan has many suppliers, from importers and distributors to installers; the checks below apply to all of them.
Look beyond the upfront cost. Choose the pixel pitch for your viewing distance and the brightness and IP rating for your environment. A common mistake is using an indoor screen where it faces strong sunlight, which makes the image look washed out. For outdoor screens, check the IP rating (for example, IP65: dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets) and the operating temperature range, as dust, humidity and monsoon rain are part of Pakistan’s conditions.
| Factor | Why It Matters |
| Pixel pitch | Affects clarity at your viewing distance |
| Brightness (nits) | Visibility in your lighting conditions |
| Warranty | Written terms covering modules, power supplies and control system |
| IP rating | Protection against dust and water outdoors |
| Cabinet quality | Structure, heat management and service access |
| Power consumption | Running costs (use the per-unit rate on your own bill) |
| Installation support | Safe, correct setup by qualified people |
| Brand and model | Make sure what is delivered matches the quotation |
Boardrooms, studios and retail lobbies usually need fine-pitch indoor LED screens that look sharp at close range. Ask whether modules are calibrated and come from matched production batches, and whether spares from the same batch will be available, as these affect how even the screen looks.
Roadside and outdoor venue screens need enough brightness for daylight and good heat management. Check datasheets for outdoor LED screens and ask how cooling works. Structures must be designed by qualified structural engineers, including wind-load calculations, and power and earthing installed by qualified electricians. Roadside screens also need the approvals the relevant authorities require.

The hardware is only part of the project. Cloud-managed players let teams schedule and update content remotely. Suppliers with local spare parts and technicians can shorten downtime when modules or power supplies need replacing; ask about stock and response times.
SMD LED can help plan power distribution, signal connections and control software setup, working with qualified engineers and electricians where required. Good installation reduces problems, but no system can rule out faults entirely, so plan for maintenance and support.
Quotations are only comparable if every supplier is quoting for the same thing. Before you contact anyone, write down a short brief so each vendor answers the same questions.
A practical rule of thumb for pitch is that the minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly equal to the pixel pitch in millimetres. A screen viewed from 4 metres works with around P4 or finer; one viewed from across a road can use a coarser pitch. For brightness, indoor screens are typically around 600–1,000 nits, and outdoor screens usually need around 4,500–6,500 nits to stay readable in direct sun.
A clear quotation lists every part of the system, not just the screen area. When comparing offers, check that each one covers the same items.
| Item | What to look for |
| Modules and cabinets | Brand, model, pixel pitch, LED type and cabinet material |
| Controller | Sending and receiving cards or media player, for example NovaStar, and whether remote access is included |
| Power supplies | Brand and quantity, and how power is distributed |
| Structure and mounting | Who designs and builds it, and who is responsible for approvals |
| Installation and commissioning | Cabling, calibration, testing and handover |
| Spares and warranty | Spare modules and power supplies, written warranty terms and support response |
It also helps to ask how the supplier deals with local conditions: heat, dust, monsoon humidity, voltage fluctuation and load-shedding. Good answers usually cover ventilation or cooling, sealed connectors, surge protection, stabilised power and a safe shutdown and restart routine.
Local presence matters for site surveys, installation and fast repairs. If you are planning a project, see our pages for SMD screens in Lahore, SMD screens in Karachi and SMD screens in Islamabad, and our services page for what installation and support include.
SMD LED supplies indoor and outdoor display screens, including our own BIA brand and other brands such as Leyard, Samsung, Absen and Unilumin. Contact us to request datasheets and a quotation, and compare them against the checklist above.
