A screen that is too small gets ignored. A screen with too coarse a pitch looks like a mosaic to the front row. A screen that is too fine for its audience burns budget on detail nobody can see.
All three mistakes come from skipping one step: measuring where your viewers actually stand. This guide gives you the formulas, the tables and worked examples from real Pakistani venues so you can size a screen with confidence.
The Three Distances That Decide Everything
Before any product talk, measure three things on site:
- Closest viewer distance: the front row, the nearest shopper, the nearest pedestrian.
- Farthest viewer distance: the back of the hall or the furthest point on the road where the screen is visible.
- Viewing angle spread: how far to the side viewers sit or pass.
The closest distance sets your pixel pitch. The farthest distance sets your screen size. The angle spread checks whether your LED viewing angle is wide enough. Our article on viewing angle and viewing distance for SMD screens covers the angle side in more depth.
Rule 1: Pixel Pitch From the Closest Viewer
The industry rule of thumb:
- Minimum viewing distance (metres) ≈ Pixel pitch (mm) x 1
- Comfortable viewing distance (metres) ≈ Pixel pitch (mm) x 2 to 3
At the minimum distance, the image looks acceptable but individual pixels may be visible. At the comfortable distance, the image looks smooth.
| Pixel Pitch | Minimum Distance | Comfortable Distance | Typical Application |
| P1.5 | 1.5 m | 3 to 4.5 m | Boardrooms, control rooms |
| P2.5 | 2.5 m | 5 to 7.5 m | Corporate lobbies, TV studios |
| P3.9 | 4 m | 8 to 12 m | Wedding halls, events, conferences |
| P4.8 | 5 m | 10 to 15 m | Large halls, concerts |
| P6 | 6 m | 12 to 18 m | Shop fronts, roadside |
| P10 | 10 m | 20 to 30 m | Highways, stadiums |
Here is the catch. Many buyers assume a smaller pitch is always better. It is not. If your nearest viewer is 12 metres away, P2.5 costs far more than P3.9 and looks the same. We tackle this in misconceptions about pixel pitch.
Rule 2: Screen Size From the Farthest Viewer
Screen height should match how far the back row sits and what they need to see.
| Content Type | Farthest Viewer Distance | Minimum Screen Height |
| Detailed content: spreadsheets, dashboards, small text | Up to 4x screen height | Farthest distance ÷ 4 |
| General presentations and video | Up to 6x screen height | Farthest distance ÷ 6 |
| Ambient visuals, decor, backdrops | Up to 8x screen height | Farthest distance ÷ 8 |
Then set width from aspect ratio. For 16:9 video, width = height x 1.78.
Rule 3: Text Height for Readability
For signage, the question is whether people can read your message.
- For strong impact, use at least 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance.
- A viewer 100 feet away needs letters at least 10 inches tall.
- Keep headlines to 5 to 7 words on outdoor screens.
Worked Examples From Pakistani Venues
Example 1: Banquet Hall in Lahore
- Hall depth: 60 ft (18 m). Closest guest table: 4 m from stage.
- Content: couple entry videos, live camera feed, decor loops.
- Pitch: Closest viewer 4 m, so P3.9 works well.
- Size: 18 m ÷ 6 = 3 m height. Width at 16:9 = 5.3 m, roughly 17.5 x 10 ft.
- Cabinets: With 500 x 500 mm rental cabinets, that is 11 wide x 6 high = 66 cabinets.

Example 2: Conference Room in Islamabad
- Room depth: 9 m. Closest seat: 2.5 m.
- Content: slides, spreadsheets, video calls.
- Pitch: P1.8 to P2.5.
- Size: 9 m ÷ 4 = 2.25 m height for detailed content. Width = 4 m.
Our SMD screens for conferences guide covers audio, camera and cabling planning for these rooms. Offices in the capital can reach our team via the SMD screen provider in Islamabad page.
Example 3: Control Room
- Operators sit 2 to 3 m away and read small data 10 hours a day.
- Pitch: P1.2 to P1.5.
- Size: Driven by the number of feeds, not the room. Plan the layout first, then the wall.
More on this in SMD screens for control rooms.
Example 4: Roadside Shop Front
- Road: 3 lanes, traffic at 40 to 60 km/h. Visible from 10 to 60 m.
- Pitch: P5 or P6.
- Size: 60 m ÷ 8 = 7.5 m height is the ideal, but a fascia rarely allows that. A 4 x 2 m screen with large, bold text works well.
Resolution: How Size and Pitch Combine
Native resolution = Screen width in mm ÷ Pixel pitch.
| Pitch | Width Needed for Full HD (1920 px) | Width Needed for 4K (3840 px) |
| P1.5 | 2.9 m | 5.8 m |
| P2.5 | 4.8 m | 9.6 m |
| P3.9 | 7.5 m | 15 m |
| P6 | 11.5 m | 23 m |
Most LED screens do not match a standard resolution exactly, and they do not need to. The controller scales content to fit. What matters is that your content is designed at the screen’s native pixel count. Our comparison of SMD screen resolution: 1080p vs 4K explains when 4K is worth paying for. You may also see “virtual pixel” screens that claim higher resolution; read what virtual pixel in SMD screens means before relying on that claim.

Outdoor Screens: Distance Means Time
For roadside screens, viewing distance becomes viewing time.
| Traffic Speed | Metres per Second | Time to Pass 150 m Visible Zone |
| 30 km/h (city) | 8.3 | 18 seconds |
| 60 km/h (main road) | 16.7 | 9 seconds |
| 100 km/h (motorway, ring road) | 27.8 | 5.4 seconds |
This decides your ad slot length and content design. On a motorway, an ad must work in 5 seconds: one image, one line, one brand. The same logic helps when you choose the right digital billboard for your business.
Rental Screens: The P3.9 vs P4.8 Question
Event organisers in Pakistan often choose between P3.9 and P4.8 rental cabinets. If your closest audience is under 8 metres, P3.9 is safer. For concerts and outdoor rallies with audiences 15 metres and beyond, P4.8 delivers the same impression at a lower cost. We compare them fully in P3.9 vs P4.8 rental SMD screens.
Sizing Checklist
- Measure closest and farthest viewer distances on site
- Choose pitch from the closest distance
- Choose height from the farthest distance and content type
- Set width by aspect ratio
- Round to whole cabinet sizes
- Check ceiling height, structure load and access
- Check power supply against the final size
- Design content at native resolution

Special Shapes and Curved Walls
Not every space suits a flat rectangle. Pillars, curved stage backdrops and wrap-around displays need curved or bendable modules. Our flexible SMD screens handle these shapes while keeping pitch and viewing distance rules the same.
Get It Sized Right the First Time

Frequently Asked Questions
How far should I sit from an LED screen?
In metres, at least the pixel pitch number. For a P3.9 screen, sit at least 4 m away, and ideally 8 to 12 m.
What size LED screen do I need for a 500-guest hall?
Most 500-guest halls are 50 to 70 ft deep. A screen about 3 m high and 5.3 m wide at P3.9 suits most of them.
Is a bigger screen or a smaller pitch more important?
For large audiences, size matters more. For close viewers reading detail, pitch matters more.
Can I use one screen for both close and far viewers?
Yes. Choose the pitch for the closest viewer and the size for the farthest viewer.
