Most quotes you receive for a digital billboard cost in Pakistan show one number: price per square foot of screen. That number is real, but it is only 70 to 85 percent of what you will actually spend before the first ad goes live. The rest hides in steel, permits, power backup and the running bill that arrives every month after.
This guide breaks the full cost into line items, gives current PKR ranges, and shows how an owner in Lahore, Karachi or Islamabad can work out payback before signing anything.
What a Digital Billboard Actually Costs: The Short Answer
A complete outdoor digital billboard in Pakistan typically costs PKR 15,000 to PKR 48,000 per square foot for the screen alone, depending on pixel pitch. Add 20 to 30 percent for structure, power, control and installation. Permits, electricity and maintenance then run as yearly costs.
For a common 10 x 20 ft roadside face (200 sq ft) at P6, expect a ready-to-run budget between PKR 5.7 million and PKR 7.7 million, before land rent or yearly authority fees.
The Seven Cost Components of a Digital Billboard
1. Screen Body (LED Modules, Cabinets, Power Supplies)
The screen is the largest single line. Its price is driven by pixel pitch, the distance in millimetres between LED centres. Smaller pitch means more LEDs per square foot, more driver ICs and a higher price. If the term is new to you, our pixel pitch explained guide covers it in plain terms.
| Pixel Pitch | Typical Placement | Screen Price (PKR per sq ft) |
| P3 Outdoor | Walkways, eye-level plaza signage | 38,000 to 48,000 |
| P4 Outdoor | Low-height fascias, shop fronts | 32,000 to 42,000 |
| P5 Outdoor | Commercial building fronts | 28,000 to 35,000 |
| P6 Outdoor | Mid-range roadside billboards | 24,000 to 32,000 |
| P8 Outdoor | Large hoardings above 20 ft height | 20,000 to 26,000 |
| P10 Outdoor | Highway and flyover poles | 15,000 to 22,000 |
These ranges match our full outdoor SMD screen price guide, which we update as dollar rates and component prices shift.
Cabinet material changes the price too. Iron cabinets are cheaper upfront. Die-cast aluminium cabinets cost more but weigh less, dissipate heat better and resist rust in Karachi’s salty air.
2. Steel Structure and Civil Work
Structural steel for rooftop and wall-mounted frames usually costs PKR 800 to PKR 1,500 per square foot of screen face, depending on steel rates and height. Freestanding unipoles are a different story. They need a reinforced concrete foundation, a structural engineer’s drawing and wind-load calculations, so they are quoted as a lump sum after a site survey.
Here is the catch: a cheap frame is the most expensive mistake you can make. A structure that flexes in a June dust storm cracks module joints and invites water in.
3. Control System and Media Player
Every billboard needs a sending card, receiving cards inside the cabinets, and a media player. For remote sites, a 4G-enabled asynchronous player lets you update ads from your office without visiting the pole. Budget roughly 3 to 6 percent of the screen cost for this layer.
4. Power Infrastructure
Pakistan’s grid is the hidden cost driver. You will need:
- A dedicated commercial connection or sub-meter
- A voltage stabiliser or AVR to protect power supplies from surges
- Surge protection devices and proper earthing
- UPS or generator backup if you sell guaranteed airtime during load-shedding
5. Permits and Authority Fees
Every city runs its own approval process. In Lahore, outdoor advertising falls under the Parks and Horticulture Authority. Karachi, Islamabad and cantonment areas each have separate bodies and fee schedules. Fees depend on location category, face size and whether the site is on a main artery. Read our digital billboards legal guide before choosing a site, and if you are in Lahore, the step-by-step PHA approval guide covers documents and timelines.
6. Installation, Cranes and Commissioning
Installation covers crane hire, rigging, module alignment, cabling, calibration and the first content upload. Night work on busy roads costs more because of traffic management.
7. Content Production
A billboard with weak creative is an expensive light box. Motion ads, 3D anamorphic content and short loops for 8 to 15 second slots all cost money. Our tips on how to design eye-catching digital billboard ads help you avoid the most common mistakes, such as too much text for a moving audience.
Worked Example: 10 x 20 ft P6 Billboard in Lahore
Let’s put real numbers on a typical roadside face on a commercial road.
| Line Item | Calculation | Estimated Cost (PKR) |
| Screen body (P6) | 200 sq ft x 28,000 | 5,600,000 |
| Steel frame (rooftop) | 200 sq ft x 1,200 | 240,000 |
| Control system and 4G player | about 4% of screen | 224,000 |
| Stabiliser, surge protection, cabling | Site-specific | 250,000 to 450,000 |
| Installation and commissioning | Site-specific | 150,000 to 300,000 |
| Upfront total (before permits and land rent) | 6,464,000 to 6,814,000 |
Swap P6 for P10 on a flyover where viewers are 40 metres away and the screen line drops to around PKR 3.7 million. Swap to P4 for a mall facade and it rises above PKR 7.4 million. Pixel pitch is the single biggest lever in your budget, which is why we wrote a separate guide on the best pixel pitch for outdoor screens in Pakistan.

The Running Costs Nobody Quotes You
Electricity
A P6 outdoor screen draws around 250 to 350 watts per square metre on average content, and much more at peak white. A 200 sq ft screen is about 18.6 square metres.
- Average draw: 18.6 m² x 300 W = about 5.6 kW
- Running 18 hours a day: about 100 units per day, or roughly 3,000 units per month
- At an illustrative commercial rate of PKR 65 per unit: about PKR 195,000 per month
Dimming the screen by 40 to 50 percent after sunset cuts this bill sharply, because full daytime brightness at night is wasted power and annoys drivers. Our detailed SMD screen power consumption breakdown shows how to model this for your own site, and some owners now offset part of the load with solar-powered digital signage.
Maintenance
Plan for yearly spares (2 to 3 percent extra modules ordered with the screen), cleaning, cooling fan checks and a service contract. Our checklist on maintaining your commercial SMD screen shows what monthly and quarterly visits should cover.
Security and Insurance
Roadside screens attract theft of cables and occasional vandalism. See how to protect digital billboards from vandalism and theft with cages, CCTV and tamper alerts.
Pakistan-Specific Factors That Move the Price
| Local Factor | Impact on Cost | What to Specify |
| Summer heat (45 to 50°C in Punjab and Sindh) | Higher failure rate of cheap power supplies | Rear ventilation, rated fans, quality PSUs |
| Monsoon rain (July to September) | Water ingress at module seams | Front IP65 minimum, sealed cable glands |
| Karachi coastal humidity and salt | Corrosion of iron cabinets | Aluminium cabinets, coated connectors |
| Voltage swings and load-shedding | PSU and receiving card burnout | AVR, surge protection, UPS for control |
| PKR to USD exchange rate | Imported component prices change quarterly | Lock the quote with a validity date |
| Smog season in Lahore (November to January) | Lower visibility of dim screens | Enough brightness headroom for daytime |
Digital vs Static Billboard: 5-Year TCO and ROI Framework
The honest comparison is not screen vs flex. It is revenue per face over five years.
| Factor | Static Flex Billboard | Digital SMD Billboard |
| Advertisers per face | 1 at a time | 6 to 10 in rotation |
| Creative change cost | New print and mounting every time | Zero, uploaded remotely |
| Campaign changeover time | 1 to 3 days | Minutes |
| Night visibility | Needs floodlights | Self-illuminated |
| Upfront cost | Low | High |
| Monthly running cost | Low | Electricity and maintenance |
Simple payback model for the P6 example:
- Upfront investment: about PKR 6.8 million
- Sell 6 slots at PKR 60,000 per month each: PKR 360,000 revenue
- Subtract electricity (with night dimming, about PKR 140,000) and maintenance (about PKR 25,000): roughly PKR 195,000 net per month before site rent and fees
- Payback: around 35 months at 6 advertisers. At 10 advertisers, it drops to under 18 months.
Occupancy is everything. A board that sits half-empty on a quiet road will not pay back. That is why site selection matters more than hardware. Our Gulberg digital billboard cost-benefit analysis shows how traffic counts on one Lahore corridor change the math.
Buyer’s Checklist Before You Approve a Quote
- Is the price per sq ft for the screen only, or screen plus structure?
- Which LED lamp and driver IC brands are used, and is it written in the quote?
- What is the rated brightness in nits, and is it measured or claimed?
- Iron or die-cast aluminium cabinets?
- How many spare modules are included?
- Who handles the permit file, and who pays the fee?
- What warranty covers modules, power supplies and labour, and for how long?
- Is there a local service team in your city, or does a technician travel?
- How long is the quote valid against exchange-rate changes?
How SMDLED Prices a Billboard Project
We start with a site survey, not a price list. Our team checks viewing distance, road speed, sun direction and structure options, then recommends a pitch and brightness that fit the budget. We supply our own BIA Outdoor SMD screen module range from P3 to P10, handle installation, and offer financing options for larger faces. You can browse our full range of outdoor SMD screens, and Lahore clients can visit our DHA office or see our work through our SMD screen provider in Lahore page.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a small digital billboard cost in Pakistan?
A small 6 x 4 ft outdoor screen (24 sq ft) at P6 costs roughly PKR 580,000 to PKR 770,000 for the screen, plus structure, control and installation.
Is P10 good enough for a highway billboard?
Yes. When most viewers are 30 metres or more away, P10 looks sharp and costs far less than P6. Closer placements need a finer pitch.
How long does a digital billboard last?
Quality outdoor SMD screens run 50,000 to 100,000 hours to half brightness. In practice, that is 7 to 10 years with good power protection and maintenance.
Do I need government approval for a digital billboard?
Yes. Every city and cantonment area requires approval and charges yearly fees. Start the permit process before you order the screen.
Can I pay in instalments?
Many buyers do. SMDLED offers financing options on larger projects, subject to project size and documentation.
